The ambition of Syndicate PPP is to enhance local maize production by engaging smallholder farmers at the grassroot and adding value to the maize produced. The unions will further expand their support to reach more farmers by ensuring their access to the inputs and services required to increase productivity. Value addition will entail processing the maize into flour, first to meet the nutritional needs of its members and subsequently to other BoP consumers within and outside the state.

About the business champion

Maize is the second most important staple crop for the South Sudanese population and is cultivated by more than 30% of households (both women and men). Despite maize being such an essential commodity, productivity per hectare is still very low compared to neighboring countries like Kenya, Uganda, and Ethiopia. Eden Multipurpose Marketing Co-operative Society (EMMCS) and Nzara General Farmers Union (NGFU) are maize producer organizations (POs) on average produce and market maize about 100MT per annum, these are very low quantities, compared to the possible production potential. EMMCS and NGFU strive to improve the livelihoods of their members through commercially driven maize production and value addition as their core business.

Enhance the capacities of NGFU and EMMCS to aggregate larger volumes of maize, store and conduct basic value addition

Project partners

Cooperatives

Provide overall coordination of member primary cooperatives and lead all cluster level activities. They will also broker services for their members including extension, market, transport etc.

County agriculture department

The county agriculture extension officers will complement the work done by NGFU & EMMCS in providing extension support to farmers.

Financial institutions (Cooperative Bank of South Sudan, Kush Bank)

Support training on financial literacy and provide financial services to actors in the partnership.

PG3 Logistics Company

Offer a guaranteed market to farmers so long as the cooperatives and their members meet the required standard.

Bakiki Agro Dealer Company

Bakiki Agro will provide clean and superior varieties of maize to farmers at a fair price.
