About the partnership

SONAF trades maize (mainly yellow maize) in Mali and the region. It sources grains from northern Côte d’Ivoire. The partnership aims at reducing transaction costs by substituting Ivorian yellow maize with Malian yellow maize sourced from POs; this implies promoting yellow maize in the Sikasso region.

Achievements
Plan and monitor production- and commercialization campaigns
Provide technical assistance to SHFs to increase production and quality
Improve post-harvest management practices and facilities
Strengthen linkages among value chain actors and supporters
Targets:
The partnerships aims to link 10,000 (4,000 women) smallholder farmers to a leading trader, interested in participating in service provision, to allow SHFs to upgrade their yellow maize production. The targeted volume for local sourcing is 30,000 tons per year of yellow maize, by 2017. The partnership aims to involve 150 small and medium-sized enterprises of which 80 are female-headed.
Market Segments:
Yellow maize for processing into animal feed and maize flour. Yellow maize grains for intra-regional export (mainly Senegal and Niger). Food industries and semi wholesaler grain traders in Mali (Sikasso, Kati, Bamako, Koulikoro, Kayes, Kita, Mopti).
