About the partnership

The smallholder rice sector operates at well below potential, as a result of poor technology adoption, weak market linkages and other factors. The partnership aims to support SHFs to improve yields and production with new varieties, improved crop management and in particular, fertilizer deep placement technology; and to facilitate the development of supply contracts with bulk buyers.

Achievements
Strengthen farmer organizations (membership, leadership, bargaining power, provision of services to members)
Promote good agricultural practices, e.g. fertilizer deep placement, mechanization
Facilitate access to improved seed varieties
Facilitate the development of a value chain finance scheme or other mechanisms, for enabling farmers to access credit for inputs and equipment
Targets:
Involve 6,000 smallholder farmers (1,500 women) and 13 small and medium enterprises (8 women-led) by 2017.
Market Segments:
Rice for local and national open markets, supermarkets, hotels, restaurants.
Project partners
Benue State Agricultural Dev Project (extension)
Bank of Agriculture, three microfinance providers (Al-Greb, Lumca, LAPO)
BAT Foundation Nigeria
