Chico Meats Ethiopia (CME) is the business champion identified to lead a partnership in the poultry sub-sector. CME was founded in the year 2015 by two Dutch entrepreneurs, aiming to process and avail high-quality chicken meat to local markets. CME has a state-of-the-art chicken slaughterhouse operating in Bishoftu, Oromia region of Ethiopia.
While promoting inclusive business model, the business idea of CME is to avail affordable chicken meat to Base-of-the-Pyramid (BoP) consumers to improve their nutrition. In 3 years, it aims to reach and improve the nutrition of around 30,000 urban low-income (BoP) consumers.
CME operates an out-grower scheme to help it meet its chicken needs through contractual agreement. The contract system serves as a competitive business model for both CME and out-growers by allowing them to minimize and share risks among them. The system also helps to ensure the quality that CME aspires to keep as market differentiation, as the out-growers will work based on set quality expectations on agreements by improving the quality and quantity of the chickens continuously.
