Rice production in Kenya, formerly concentrated in the Mwea region in Central Kenya, is expanding into Western Kenya. This expansion is being driven by the private sector – traders, processors, service providers and others, working together with small-scale farmers, in partnerships set up and facilitated by 2SCALE.
A key partner is Kisumu-based Nyabon Enterprises, which provides mechanization equipment, fertilizers, farmer training and other services. Nyabon hosts the Siany model farm in Nyang’ande town. The farm also serves as an aggregation center for rice farmers in the Ahero irrigation scheme. 2SCALE and Nyabon held a series of meetings with rice traders who buy from local farmers for processing and sale in Kenya and Uganda.
